Third course to complete The Legends in Myrtle Beach, Parkland, is a Larry Young design. Parkland is a more traditional course than Mooreland and Heathland, the other two courses at The Legends. The course condition of Parkland is excellent, manicured fairways and rough, huge receptive greens and some very deep and penal bunkers.
The Parkland is one of my favorite courses. A traditional layout with eighteen different holes directs the player to use every club and shot in the bag. By every shot I mean every shot! Fades and draws with tee shots and many approach shots will help the player score. Uncontrolled fades or draws (snap hooks and wicked slices) will have the player hitting the hated ‘provisional’ ball.
A long driver of the ball will have an advantage on Parkland. Having a mid to short iron into receptive greens helps keep the three putts to a minimum by having an approach shot closer to the hole. Believe me, almost everyone will have at least one three putt on Parkland.
The Par Threes on Parkland are nothing to sneeze at! Shortest Par Three is around 170 yards from the white tees and two of the remaining three are over 200 yards. About seventeen bunkers protect the Par Three greens along with three hazards. Make par on all four of the Par Threes and you might pick up a stroke or two on the competition.
Holes number nine, ten and eighteen, although great holes, don’t seem to fit the Parkland design. These three holes are very wide open with huge mounds and some blind shots. They are more like the other courses at The Legends. Although numbers nine and eighteen are two difficult holes, they seem out of place.
The Legends Resort is a very well run and managed facility. Having approximately 800-900 rounds a day (approx. 200,000 rounds a year) would lead one to believe a mess at the bag drop. Wrong! The staff operates like a well-oiled machine firing on all cylinders. Even the restaurant runs smoothly and efficiently serving breakfast and lunch (which was included for our group) to hundreds of golfers.
The Pro Shop staff was helpful and willing to assist in making tee times for the other course affiliated with The Legends; Heritage, Oyster Bay and TPC Myrtle Beach. The condos at The Legends are well maintain and convenient to the courses as well as the local sports bar and grill ‘Ailsa Pub.’ All this and a friendly attitude make The Legends a great facility. It’s understandable why The Legends is one of the most respected resorts in Myrtle Beach.
