Rivers Edge Golf Club, N.C.

logo-RiversEdge-210x121This is a great Arnold Palmer Signature Course. From the first tee shot to the last putt on eighteen, this track is not only enjoyable but very challenging. Don’t be distracted by the beautiful scenery or you might be searching for your ball somewhere in that scenery.

I am a firm believer in playing from the set of tees which allows you the most enjoyment, especially when playing the course for the first time. This holds true at Rivers Edge. The proper choice allows the player to use every club in the bag. Many tee shots allow for a good long drive while others need a specific distance to prevent disaster.

Missing the fairways at Rivers Edge is a definite thing to avoid (which is true on most courses). Here, hazards and woods along the fairways require controlled shots. Be careful to make the correct club selection on many of the par threes or you’ll be dropping another ball in frustration.

The greens are small on most holes which require a good approach shot. This almost plays into the defense on many holes. You’ll have plenty of room off the tee and then find yourself needing to land an approach shot on a green the size of the SUV you came in. Oh, and just as fast as the hood on that SUV. All that being said, you’ll find the greens are firm, fast and true. Hit the approach shot to most greens and have a great look at birdie. But feel good about walking off with par!

The eighteenth is a great finishing hole. After playing fairly well most of the round don’t get too confident on the approach shot. Miss the narrow but deep green which is protected by bunkers and hazards and bogey might be a good score! A comfortable shot off the tee and then a challenging approach shot. Great finish to a great course.

Rivers Edge Golf Club has a great, friendly and accommodating staff. Well-conditioned fairways and fast greens along with beautiful scenery make this course a must play. As I always recommend, spend the three or four dollars and get a yardage book. If you don’t care about the yardage book, pick up an extra sleeve or two of balls, which ever you think is the best value for the buck.
